This historic producer was founded in 1751, and today they have 520 hectares of vineyard in the Douro in all of its three sub-regions: Lower Corgo, Upper Corgo and Douro Superior. The winemaking is headed up by the talented Luis Sotomayor, and manages to restrain the Douro's natural exuberance to produce wines that have a freshness, like Esteva and Papa Figos, allied to a wonderful depth and texture, as with Vinha Grande Red and Quinta da Leda. The golden oriole ('papa figos' in Portuguese) is one of the rarest birds in the Douro region. An attractive, brightly-coloured migratory bird, its uniqueness and rarity make it the perfect inspiration for this lovely wine from Casa Ferreirinha. The grapes are selected from the Douro Superior region, with around 25% coming from Quinta da Leda and the rest from producers owning vineyards that ideally face north or are at a relatively high altitude. After gentle destemming and crushing, the grapes are conveyed to stainless steel vats, where maceration of the skins and alcoholic fermentation take place. During this stage, intense maceration occurs by means of pumping over. The temperature is controlled using a refrigeration and/or heating system at around 25C. At the end of maceration, which is determined individually for each vat according to the quality of the vintage and the varieties, the wine is separated from the solids. The liquid resulting from pressing is stored separately from the free-run juice. Malolactic fermentation is fostered under carefully controlled temperature conditions. Deep ruby red in colour with violet nuances. It has a very intense aroma, dominated by floral notes of violet and rock rose, balsamic aromas of resin and cedar and well-ripened red and black fruit. On the palate, it has good volume, well-integrated , high-quality tannins and black and red fruit notes. Its finish is elegant and harmonious.
