The SOLAR JAR harvests the sun's energy during the day and stores it in the built-in battery. In the evening you can switch on the SOLAR JAR with the magnetic switch and enjoy the bright light from 4 high-efficiency LEDs that transform the jar into a lantern with a lighting capacity of up to 12 hours after a full solar charge. This way of generating light is fun, independent and provides a simple option for ecological living.

The highlight: the solar panel in the screw-top lid of the SOLAR JAR allows you to decorate the 1 litre glass jar any way you please. How did you come upon the idea for this product?

The SOLAR JAR is a cooperative venture with CONSOL, a long-established major glass producer in South Africa. The was to use the nostalgic preserving jars we all know from childhood to produce a light source. There are many parts of South Africa that have no access to the power grid or that experience frequent power cuts - but that do have a great deal of sunlight. The obvious solution was to develop a solar-powered lamp. After many months of tinkering about the SOLAR JAR was born. By the way, the first prototype from 2011 is still working to this day…

What makes your product so special?

What makes the SOLAR JAR so special is the unique way it combines various properties: On the one hand it is a very practical and functional light source. Secondly it is a very beautiful and aesthetically pleasing product that inspires individual creativity. Thirdly, thanks to the solar technology and the materials used, it is a very sustainable and ecological light. In addition, we produce it directly in South Africa and have already created more than 60 jobs for people with no previous qualifications. By combining these properties, we have succeeded in producing the SOLAR JAR not just as an essential source of light in Africa, but also a way to bring enlightenment to people in Europe too. The SOLAR JAR is simply great fun.

What have you liked most about your start-up?

Naturally the crowning moment was when Bill Gates became aware of the SOLAR JAR and tweeted about it. This was a genuine seal of approval for us. In the beginning, we never imagined that the SOLAR JAR would attract such high profile attention and reach people throughout the world.
