Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Portfolio: Fantasy Islands

I originally received this book damaged due to poor packaging. But Amazon worked it out with a quick and easy replacement. Continuing the line of the SI Swimsuit Portfolios, Fantasy Islands provides us with more the same .... gorgeous women and unbelievable beautiful backdrops. I like that both the photographers and the models are emphasized in this series as it takes both (and a team of many others) to produce these works of art. I have always loved the SI's selection of models. Gloss pages and fantastic color reproduction. Love this series.

I'm going to make this review as straightforward as I can. Given the ridiculous cheap prices most of these SI Swimsuit Portfolio's can be purchased for, they become one of the smartest book buys an SI Swimsuit fan can make, or one can make for an SI Swimsuit fan they know. The only reason I don't give these SI Portfolio's a 5 star rating is because Sports Illustrated needs to get a bit more cutting edge with thier fashion photography. The SI Swimsuit Issue used to be considered the pinnacle of beautiful and sexy swimsuit model photography. The days when supermodels like Paulina Porizkova, Elle Macpherson, Tyra Banks etc. graced the covers of the SI Swimsuit issue, SI was king, but over the last 2 decades, Sports Illustrated was slowly eclipsed by other mens magazines like Maxim and FHM and the main reason for this was the style of photography. SI stuck with the style of photography they became famous for while magazines like Maxim took a much more cutting edge and sexy approach, which is why Maxim became the #1 selling mens magazine. Don't get me wrong, a lot of people still enjoy the SI Swimsuit magazine, but it just isn't the king of the hill like it used to be. Thier style of photography has become a bit too wholesome as while other publications have continually pushed the boundaries of sexy cutting edge fashion photography, SI's photography and approach has basically remained unchanged. I still enjoy SI's photography, but being a photographer myself I have to admit that thier style and approach definitely needs to be updated a bit. I still can't give these SI Portfolio books a higher recommendation for SI fans. Again, given the cheap prices most can be purchased for, they become some of the best buys on the fashion book market. SI might not be king like they used to be and thier the style and approach for thier photography might seem a bit aged, but they still produce beautiful pictures of some of the most beautiful women in the world. 4 Stars!
