About the Startup Describe your product in 3 words.
Instant. Lighting. Always.
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
GravityLight was designed as a viable alternative to kerosene
lighting for low-income, off-grid, households.
Globally, over 1 billion people live without access to
electricity and rely instead on dangerous, expensive and
polluting kerosene lamps for their home lighting - to study by,
to work by, to cook by, all evening, every night. This number
rises to over 2 billion people when you include families that
have unreliable or intermittent electricity, who rely on kerosene
when the power goes out, regularly, and for days on end.
Using kerosene for home lighting is really bad. The fumes are as
harmful as those from smoking s, and children trying to
study by it are heavily exposed from an early age. Unintentional
ingestion of kerosene is the leading cause of child poisoning in
the developing world. 30% of all burn cases admitted to hospitals
in Nigeria were attributed to kerosene lamp explosions. A single
kerosene lamp emits 150 kg of carbon dioxide per year and is a
significant cause of black carbon. Added to this, it's a poverty
trap - consuming up to 30% of earnings in low-income households;
this for lighting alone.
We were moved to try and find a solution to this problem. This
is how we came up with GravityLight.
What makes your product special?
GravityLight is unique. It contains no batteries, so can be
stored for a long time without batteries spoiling or going flat.
It works indoors, independent of the weather, time of day or
season. It produces power for lighting on demand, with no
pre-charge, for as many hours as needed, as long as the weight
stays off the floor.
GravityLight is brought to you by Deciwatt Ltd. Every purchase
of GravityLight funds The GravityLight Foundation in it's mission
to eradicate kerosene lighting in the developing world.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
The response, support and goodwill from crowdfunders has been
overwhelming. The flow of kind messages that flooded in when we
introduced GravityLight to the world was phenomenal. Now seeing
GravityLight being installed in low-income, off-grid homes, and
seeing GravityLight offer lighting and comfort to normally
on-grid homes in times of distress or disaster, has made the
whole enterprise incredibly fulfilling.
